Today I needed to output a blog excerpt similar to the_excerpt() in WordPress. I came up with the following Ruby on Rails function that seems to work pretty well.
def the_excerpt article, length=200, read_more_text='[Read More]'
raw(truncate(strip_tags(article.contents), :length => length,
: omission => "... #{link_to read_more_text, polymorphic_path(article)}"))
end
It works by first stripping out html tags, then truncating to the desired length, then calling raw so that HTML entity codes aren’t escaped.
Note: WordPress was converting 
mission to a smiley face so if you copy and paste the code change : omission to mission.
